'Life offers many opportunities and challenges and assuming a caring role has to be one of the greatest challenges anyone can face in their lives. …Mary Jordan has created a valuable guide for carers, with practical information and quotes from carers whereby readers will realise they are not alone.'
Philip Wroughton
Vice President
The Princess Royal Trust for Carers

‘ I remember my sheer amazement when I first realised the extent of my mother’s memory loss. I asked her for the spare car keys (she was a non-driver) and because I knew her habits suggested that she look first in her handbag. She went through each item in her handbag one by one asking me, ‘Is this the car key?’ even about items like business cards or her comb. It was one of the most upsetting episodes in our relationship. ’

The Essential Carer’s Guide is built around personal stories of this kind, which any fellow carer will instantly recognize. They hold together a practical book, packed with information and wise advice that any carer will appreciate is based on great experience.

About the author

Mary Jordan has extensive experience both of care of elderly relatives and of the NHS. For nearly 10 years she has worked on the management side of the NHS, latterly teaching Practice Managers about General Practice and writing for the medical press while caring for her parents and parents-in-law, and helping others to do likewise.

Her new book is an essential companion for anyone responsible for an elderly relative or friend. It covers physical, social and financial needs, across the stages of immediate, intermediate and advanced care. It will save carers many frustrating hours of information-hunting and, most importantly, help carers to plan ahead and ask the right questions at the right time with the feeling that someone else has been up this apparently lonely road before them.
